Simona Halep in danger of missing Cincinnati due to foot injury
Wimbledon champion Simona Halep underwent foot treatment for the injury that made her retire in the Toronto quarterfinals just a couple of days before her Cincinnati first match.
Simona accused Achilles heel discomfort along with lower left leg ‘pain’ in her Toronto run that saw her stop in the quarterfinals. There, she lost the first set against the tournament’s dark horse - Marie Bouzkova -, before throwing the towel.
"Today I felt it more, so that's why I decided to retire", Halep told WTA Tennis.
The injury proved to be severe enough to make Simona undergo treatment just a few days before her start at the Cincinnati Open. Luckily for the Romanian, she didn’t have to play a first-round match, so she will, hopefully, be able to overcome the injury in the remaining recovery time.
Simona has to defend a large number of points at Cincy as she played last year’s final losing it in three sets against world number 5, Kiki Bertens. Even if she lost the final, the Wimbledon queen proved her mastery on this tournament's court as she flew past Tomljanovic, Barty, Tsurenko and Sabalenka. Halep’s first opponent in this year's Cincinnati will be either Alexandrova or Suarez Navarro, of course, if the injury will let the Romanian participate.
Halep posted on Instagram a photo of her bandaged foot and one where her physiotherapist – Marian Gheba -, was massaging the problematic area.
