Thanasi Kokkinakis speaks on his love for Mexico and Los Cabos
Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis enjoys playing in Mexico as he is aiming to make another deep run on the hard courts of Los Cabos.
World No. 191 Kokkinakis came from a set down to beat fourth-seeded Lucas Pouille 2-6 6-4 6-3 and reach the quarterfinal in Los Cabos.
The 23-year-old Australian fell just short of winning it all in Los Cabos in 2017 as he ended runner-up in the final to American Sam Querrey.
Kokkinakis has had a challenging and Injury-plagued season but handing the fan favorite a Los Cabos wildcard was an easy choice for the organizers.
“I mean... I love Mexico, I love this tournament and I’m very grateful with the fans. They’re the best!” Kokkinakis said after beating Pouille, per the tournament's Twitter.
Kokkinakis and Pouille were all tied after the opening four games of the match before the Frenchman broke the Australian twice in a row to win give games in a row take a 6-2 1-0 lead.
Kokkinakis earned his first break of the match in the ninth game and then successfully served out for the second set in the following game.
The Australian then broke the Frenchman in the fifth and ninth game of the third set to complete comeback.
Kokkinakis will fight against seventh-seeded Radu Albot for a place in the Los Cabos semifinal.
