Grigor Dimitrov: 'US Open win over Roger Federer gives me confidence'
Grigor Dimitrov defeated in three sets to reach the quarter-finals at the Chengdu Open. The Bulgarian player said: "It was very tough and tricky point for me. Daniel, we have known each other for a long time, played a lot. The early stages of a tournament is always tricky. He has already won a match. His game is really good with this kind of surface. All I have to do is take my time. It's tricky, its a fast court. It's my first match since the US Open and for sure there’s some nerves and I want to do well. I was just trying to do what I have built on for the past week. It’s been an interesting role for the past 15 weeks. I have not been home for 16 weeks. So its always good to get that extra win on the road."
Asked if the win over Federer increases his confidence going towards the end of the year, Dimitrov replied: "Yeah, everytime you beat a top player, it's something that I appreciate and it's been a long time since I won this match. It couldn't have happened on a better stage, US Open, Quarterfinals… the atmosphere was crazy. Of course,it gives you a lot of confidence. I want to be that player one day. I feel like I’m back on the radar again and everyone tries to play their best tennis against me. The match against Roger was always great but it’s just a match. I have to accept I feel very humble winning this match in particular and at the same time focus on every other matches that I have to play throughout the year. I know it might sound really crazy to you but the first match almost meant more to me in the sense that it’s a strong win that I need the win to build confidence. Confidence is not about beating one guy, its a process."
