IBM and USTA Launch Coach Advisor at US Open
Tennis - IBM has launched Coach Advisor at the US Open, along with the United States Tennis Association.
According to Yahoo Sports, Coach Advisor is "a new technology that employs artificial intelligence and analytics to develop and train tennis players."
The technology helps to measure amongts other things physical exertion, endurance by using data with videos from tennis matches that help coaches analyze matches.
Among the players who helped pilot the technology were 21-year-old Francis Tiafoe and 26-year-old Sloane Stephens.
Martin Blackman, the U.S. Tennis Association’s general manager of player development, commented, ""The great thing about this project is it really gives us a new metric to look at to mine video and find out what data correlates with performance. This is a game-changer because it allows a coach to bring their intuition and their knowledge develop a hypothesis but really validate it with data-driven metrics. One of the really cool things about this project is that coaches are going to be able to identify a great result that a player has, like a Francis or a Sloane, and then work backwards and look at all the correlating factors that led to that great result."
Speaking to VentureBeat, Blackman commented, "“The USTA is dedicated to developing the next generation of world-class American tennis players, and Coach Advisor offers our coaches access to all-new data to drive performance. We are excited to continue our work with IBM to pair analytics with our coaching expertise and believe IBM Coach Advisor will give us a competitive advantage to help change the paradigm of tennis coaching and development in the U.S.”
