John McEnroe: Daniil Medvedev is type of player tennis needs
Former world No. 1 John McEnroe says rising Russian star Daniil Medvedev is a type of player the game of tennis needs.
Medvedev, seeded at No. 5, saw off three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (6) 6-3 3-6 6-1 to reach his maiden Major semifinal at the US Open.
The 23-year-old has been absolutely impressive throughout the whole US summer hard-court swing.
The Russian, who recently won his maiden Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati, is now a win away from reaching his fourth consecutive final.
"This is the type of player we need out there challenging the top guys,’ McEnroe said on Amazon Prime, as revealed on Metro UK. "He’s embraced being the villain, I’m not sure he’ll want to do that his whole career.
"But talk about turning negatives into positives so far. Medvedev has got to be feeling absolutely amazing and he should be feeling that."
World No. 5 Medvedev plays next former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov, who stunned Roger Federer to progress into the semifinal.
