Stan Wawrinka will not be able to compete against Roger Federer on Friday in the Basel's Swiss Indoors quarter-finals. The 34-year-old Lausanne native is dealing with a back injury.
Wawrinka's announcement came an hour and a half after his tight three-set second round win over the American Frances Tiafoe on Thursday.
"I got injured during the last game of the match", shared Wawrinka in a press conference talking to reporters. "I am so sad for not competing here in Basel again this year. I am very sorry."
We will see if Wawrinka will be healthy enough to play the Paris Masters next week or if he will end his season early than planned. The three-time Major winner is set to play an exhibition event in Saudi Arabia in mid December.
Wawrinka is a world No. 15, he reached the US Open and French Open quarter-finals, Rotterdam final. He also lost to Andy Murray in a championship clash at last week's Antwerp Open.
In Vienna Dominic Thiem instead reached the quarters after defeating Fernando Verdasco. "I started the match on a bad note, but that was the only bad thing about my game today. Then I used my forehand better, which was the biggest key. Now against Pablo Carreno Busta it will not be easier, every match against him was tough, even the most recent one in Shanghai. But I played two very good matches this week so far and this is definitely the best I have ever played in Stadthalle."
