Coach opens up on the keys of Dominic Thiem's success

Dominic Thiem's coach Nicolas Massu spoke about his successful co-operation with the Austrian player who won Indian Wells title and defeated Roger Federer thrice this year. The Chilean said: "I only give the best out of myself every day to help him play his best tennis. Some little changes make a difference on the hard court. He is very smart, he has a good touch and results make him of playing well everywhere, with a few complete players like him on Tour."

"You are on court alone in this game, you do not have ten more people like in football, everything is about self-belief. Now he is confident, the season has been unbelievable, he needs to believe in his job, even when things do not go so well. It's not easy to win in front of your friends and relatives, but now he is calmer."

Looking ahead to the 2020 season, Massu added: "Normally they always ask him when he will win the French Open, when it will be his maiden Major title. For me the most important thing is that Dominic is happy, if he is, he plays a better tennis, you can practice 20 hours a day, but if you are not happy it's so difficult to enjoy yourself on the court and deliver your best tennis."

For Massu, Thiem is going through the best time. "Very young, but with experience, the next four years will be very important for his career. If he can stay injury-free, suffer illnesses and other issues, then he has the chance to win a Major and he was close twice."
