Ugo Humbert happy with 2019 season, set to enter 2020 confident
Rising French star Ugo Humbert was in great spirits after beating extremely talented Jannik Sinner at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.
The Frenchman, who lost his first two group stage matches, put up a big performance to beat the Italian 4-3 (5) 3-4 (3) 4-2 4-2 but it wasn't enough for him to make the semifinal.
On the other side, the 18-year-old Italian -- who won his first two matches in Milan -- progressed into the semifinal despite losing to world No. 55 Humbert.
Humbert, who started the year ranked at No. 102 in the world, made three ATP semifinals this year and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 46 in the world.
"I played a great match. It was the last match of the season and I’m happy to have won it against a great player. It was really nice,” Humbert said after beating Sinner, per the ATP website. “It was a big improvement this year. I played a lot of great matches against good players. I have a lot of experiences, sometimes new ones, and I have a lot of confidence for the next season."
