Andy Murray: 'You'd expect Roger Federer to finish before me, Nadal, Djokovic'
Andy Murray was asked if looking at Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic having success after turning 30 can be inspiring for him. The British player said: “I honestly haven’t really thought much about [it]. But I guess seeing guys playing in their late 30s is a positive thing that you can look at and go it is possible to keep doing it and play at that level. But if I was still playing at 38, I’d be very surprised about that. You’d expect Roger to finish first as he is six years older than me and Novak and five years older than Rafa. Seeing what they are still doing is fantastic and hopefully, I can try and get back on the court and have the chance to compete against them again before I finish.”
Opening up on the farewell video he released at the Australian Open earlier this year, Murray added: "I didn’t think I had said that. I didn’t really know what I had said at the press conference. I was so emotional. But I didn’t think I had said I’m retiring. I think I’d said I would like to get to Wimbledon to stop and at the time that was my plan. I didn’t want to play any longer than that because I couldn’t do it anymore. I can’t remember exactly what was in the video but it was obviously a tricky moment for Mark Petchey (the on-court interviewer) as well. I had said to my team and my family that if it is the end, that’s fine. That would have been an amazing way to finish. Brilliant atmosphere, packed crowd, epic match, almost came back and I was like ‘that is fine’. If I had to finish there I would have been okay with it.”
