Daniel Nestor: 'Canadian Davis Cup team will be the one to beat in the future'
Tennis has been the sport to follow in Canada in 2019, producing one of their greatest seasons thanks to young and upcoming stars. A teenager Bianca Andreescu claimed three big titles, including the very first singles Major crown for Canada at the US Open, finishing the season in the top-5 after starting it from outside the top-150! Denis Shapovalov claimed the first ATP title in Stockholm and earned enough points to find himself in the top-15, backed by another promising youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime who is the youngest player in the top-70 after three ATP finals in 2019.
The Canadians saved the best for last, reaching the final at the first edition of the Davis Cup Finals thanks to Denis Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil who defeated Italy, USA, Australia and Russia to advance into the first Davis Cup final. There, Spain proved to be too strong but it was still an incredible week for North American country that will try to repeat that run at the ATP Cup in January. Legendary doubles player Daniel Nestor was in Madrid and worked with the Canadian doubles team, enjoying what he saw on the court and announcing even bigger things from this compact squad in the years to come.
"The goal has always been to keep moving in the right direction," said Daniel Nestor. "I think it's hard to move more in the right direction than we did this year. What Bianca did is one of the greatest moments in Canadian sports history. It's truly amazing what's going on with our Davis Cup team as well; they will be one of the teams to beat in the next couple of years. They have a solid team in more ways and on all surfaces."
"I think the gloves are off," said Tennis Canada president and CEO Michael Downey. "How high these kids go, I don't know. But we have not seen the best of them."
