McEnroe: Serena Williams, please win 2 more Slams so we can leave Court in the past
Tennis legend John McEnroe has come out against Margaret Court in his latest "Commissioner of Tennis" video for Eurosport UK, saying that he wants Serena Williams to win two more Slams to overtake Court's all time record. Court is being recognised, but "not celebrated' this week by Tennis Australia for the 50th anniversary of her calendar year Grand Slam of 1970 but her views on gay marriages have been widely criticized.
In the video, McEnroe says, "The air quality in Melbourne is not the only nightmare Tennis Australia is having, Margaret Court is another one. Please win two more Grand Slams so we can leave Margaret Court and her offensive views in the past where she belongs. There's a difference between a recognition of that and a celebration of someone. Her recognition is for her tennis achievements only. It doesn't work that way. You can't separate the person from their achievements
“There’s only one thing longer than the list of Margaret Court’s tennis achievements. It’s her list of offensive and homophobic statements. Tennis Australia is facing a dilemma: What do they do with their crazy aunt? You can’t separate the person from her achievements. Look at me. If you recognise the fact I won seven Grand Slams, guess what? You’ve got to celebrate the fact that I have the loudest mouth in the history of the tennis tour. Serena, please win two more Slams and pass Margaret Court so we can leave Margaret Court in the past, where she belongs".
