Yevgeny Kafelnikov Refutes Bryan Brothers Story on 2003 Indian Wells Doubles Final

Former World No. 1 tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov, of Russia, has refuted the comments of the Bryan Brothers that they made about the doubles final in Indian Wells in 2003 between Kafelnikov and Wayne Ferreira against the American doubles specialists.

In an interview to The Los Angeles Times, Bob Bryan commented, "We got to the final that year and we were matched against Yevgeny Kafelnikov [of Russia] and Wayne Ferreira [of South Africa]. The day before the match, they came to us and said they were tired, had been on the road a long time and wanted to go home. Could we split the money and they would hand us the title?”

Mike Bryan continued, “We talked to our dad. We were 25 years old then and we came to the conclusion that we will win and wanted to do it on the court. So, we said no. We would play for it. We did. And we lost.”

Speaking to RBC in Russia, Kafelnikov says, "I can’t comment on this in any way. Who said it, Bob or Mike, I don’t even know who said it, they look so alike. Which one is right-handed or left-handed? Have we met? We always meet in the locker rooms, we talk. But what we talked about 17 years ago, I don’t remember, and I don’t understand how it can be fantasized."

Kafelnikov is a former world No. 1 tennis player, from Russia. He won two Grand Slam singles titles, the 1996 French Open and the 1999 Australian Open. He also won four Grand Slam doubles titles, being the last man to have won both the men's singles and doubles titles at the same Grand Slam tournament, which he did at the 1996 French Open.
