Alexander Zverev: 'I can do all three disciplines at the Olympics'

Last year, Alexander Zverev had severely criticized the new Davis Cup format by going to South America with Roger Federer for an exhibition tour during the Madrid finals. However, the long suspension of the circuit due to the pandemic could lead him to reevaluate this position.

The former World number 3 has experienced a drop in performance over the past twelve months, also due to some off-court problems that have taken away his serenity and certainties. Sascha had started 2020 well, reaching the semifinal at the Australian Open, the first in a Slam tournament. This stop did not favor him, given that he should have defended a few points over the past few months.

“If we don’t play a tournament by November and it’s the first tournament in Madrid, I would be eager to play tennis again,” Zverev told Nau. “That’s why we have to have a look. I always say that I love to play for Germany and hopefully I can do all three disciplines at the Olympics. I also like to play the ATP Cup and I appreciated the Davis Cup – as long as it was the real Davis Cup.”

Zverev has been coached by his parents since he was very young. His mother was initially his primary coach before his father took over at some point. Zverev made the decision to hire former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Washington Open in the summer of 2017.

He fired Ferrero following the Australian Open after Ferrero criticized the rest of Zverev's coaching team. Ivan Lendl, another former world No. 1, joined Zverev's team in August 2018. They split up in July 2019 due to disappointing results and personal differences. Zverev has stated that Lendl was more interested in his dog or his golf game than in professional coaching.
