The WTA Wuhan Open social media team posted an video on their Twitter account of tennis resuming at the venue saying, "Tennis is BACK in Wuhan! Our courts have been open since 1 May. Plenty of tennis, soccer and basketball being played."

The Wuhan Open is one of the Premier 5 tournaments on the WTA Tour and made its debut in the 2014 season.

Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province and the most populous city in Central China, is the hometown of two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na.

The 2019 edition of the tournament was won by Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Alison Riske 6–3, 3–6, 6–1 in the final.

The first case of Coronavirus was reported from Wuhan. The city lost a number of lives in the battle against the virus, and was under complete lockdown for more than 70 days.

The lockdown in Wuhan was lifted on April 8, as no new cases emerged and all the existing patients recovered as well and the city is now slowly coming back to life.
