'Never thought Roger Federer was going to be the best', says former Argentine player

In the months of the stop for the coronavirus epidemic, Roger Federer had decided to undergo a second knee arthroscopy. According to Severin Luthi, interviewed by the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, in mid-August the Swiss will take up his racket again to prepare for the next season. Federer has not played since the Australian Open semi-final lost to Djokovic. ATP tournaments are expected to resume on August 22 with the Cincinnati tournament, on the occasion moved to New York. The US Open, on the other hand, is scheduled from August 31 to September 13. In a recent interview with ATPtour.com, former Argentine player Lucas Ker recalled the landmark match and also revealed what he thought of Federer at that point of time.

Ker on Roger Federer

“I’m often reminded that I beat him but not many know that it was his first match on the ATP Tour," Lucas Ker said. "I never thought or imagined that Roger Federer was going to be one of the best in the world and in history, I really didn’t. It’s incredible that he progressed as a player to be one of the best in history,” Lucas Ker added. “I had to play a Swiss junior and at the time Switzerland didn’t have much of a (tennis) history. They weren’t very good players,” Ker stated. The Argentine did, however, form a good verdict about the rest of Federer’s game. “Roger had a good serve, a good forehand but his backhand was stunted, not good at all," Ker said. "I remember moving him over there all the time and that allowed me to beat him solidly in two sets.” Roger Federer will resume his tennis training in August, says a key member of is coaching team. “Roger Federer has resumed physical training with Pierre Paganini,” Luthi told reporters in Switzerland. “Tennis training is planned for mid-August.” Federer said: “My physical trainer programmed me a training block for 20 weeks and asked me if I wanted to do it and I said ‘yes, of course.' I would like to discover what else is there for me, in tennis. I hope I can have a good 2021 and from there, we’ll see. I am working on my rehabilitation and my goal is to be able to be 100% by December or January, so that I can compete the entire season in 2021.”
