Roger Federer: 'One of my daughters wanted to learn Japanese'

Out for the rest of 2020, Roger Federer resumed training after his right knee operation. The surgery was successful and, after a few weeks of recovery, King Roger returned to training. To see him with a racket in his hand, according to the plans of his coach Severin Lüthi in an interview with the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, it will be necessary to wait mid-August, in view of the next season, probably the last of his career. In a recent interview with SRFsport, the former World number 1 opened up about the impact of the pandemic on his family life as well as his children’s excitement for the 2021 Olympics.

Federer: 'We take the virus very seriously'

“I have never seen my parents and friends. We take the virus very seriously and had to explain it to the kids" - Roger Federer said. “The two girls are eleven now and understood it immediately. The boys forgot it at some point" - he added. Federer spoke of their enthusiasm about the Games and said they are even planning to learn a new language: “The children would have liked to come too. You are still talking about it. One of my daughters even wanted to learn Japanese,” Federer stated. A few days ago it was announced that On, the Swiss sports shoe brand of which Roger Federer has been a shareholder and collaborator for some time, will supply material to the national Olympic team. This event was the occasion for a television interview in which Federer shared the stage with another Swiss sports legend, namely the triathlete Nicola Spirig, Olympic gold medalist in London in and silver in Rio. In 2012, the year of victory at the Olympics, Spirig was elected sportsman of the year in Switzerland. An extraordinary result for someone who was born and lived in the era of the Master of Basel, the greatest and most famous Swiss athlete ever. This 2020 has been quite troubled from a sporting point of view. That something was wrong had all been noticed at the Australian Open where Federer had seemed somewhat fogged and risked losing against players of the highest caliber such as John Millmann and Tennys Sandgren. It was not surprising therefore that after a series of performances, Roger announced the decision to undergo knee surgery. Together with COVID-19 and the consequent interruption of the circuit, there was then a second surgical operation. But now the knee seems finally in place and Federer is ready to go back to training.
