Devvarman: "Roger Federer made me look like an amateur"
Former Indian tennis player Somdev Devvarman recalled a particular challenge with Roger Federer at the Roland Garros, in the second round of the French tournament in 2013. Talking about that match during the podcast of his friend and countryman Sorabh Pant, Devvarman remembered that challenge and, despite a clear defeat, he certainly has good memories.
During the interview Devvarman said a lot of anecdotes: Federer in 2013 came from a disappointing year, especially with a great delusion at Wimbledon, where he was defending champion, and also afflicted by a bad back injury. Devvarman was in one of his best moments of his career since he reached the second round of the Australian Open and he got the the third round at the Miami Open.
Thanks to the not quite ideal surface for Federer, many believed that the Indian tennis player could create some difficulties for the Swiss champion. Devvarman said: "Before the challenge against Roger Federer at the Roland Garros, many were pumping me and believing in my good result.
It was the period where everyone thought that Roger Federer was in the final stages of his career and let's say he was getting older." In reality the match did not meet these expectations, but rather Federer dominated and conquered the success on Suzanne Lenglen with a clear 6-2; 6 -1; 6-1.
"Roger made me look like an amateur" The indian told: "I felt fit, but when Roger hit the ball I almost stood there watching. Despite the surface Roger made me look like an amateur. I don't think I've ever played so well in my career and lost so clearly." Despite that defeat Devvarman remembers that game with pleasure: "It was a really good experience for me. Objectively I was really far from that level and therefore already playing against Federer was a wonderful experience for me."The Swiss Maestro will probably be remembered as one the most successful player in the history of tennis. Despite this, tRoger Federer has always had little successes during his career on the Parisian clay-courts. In fact at the Roland Garros Federer has achieved only one success, and he has instead collected numerous painful defeats, in particular in the finals against his longtime rival Rafael Nadal.
This year the French Open will be played at the end of September due to the pandemic, two weeks after the US Open. Roger Federer will come back on the court for the Australian Open 2021, after hi second surgery on his right knee.
