A statement from the USTA (United States Tennis Association) on Friday said that the 89th-ranked Andrea Petkovic has withdrawn from the tournament. She would be replaced by Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in the main draw.

It was not immediately clear what the reason was for Petkovic to pull out of the tournament.

She did not play the Australian Open in January due to a knee injury and underwent surgery for the same in February. She did resume training during the tennis shutdown in May and also played an exhibition event in July in Berlin.

Petkovic is the latest player to pull out of the tournament either due to injury or due to concerns about travelling to New York during the current pandemic.

Defending men's champion Rafael Nadal, 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer, Frenchman Gael Monfils, Australian Nick Kyrgios, three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka are among the notable absentees on the men's side.

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, World No. 2 Simona Halep, defending women's champion Bianca Andreescu, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens and Swiss Belinda Bencic are among the Top 10 players who have withdrawn from the women's event. Former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova has also decided not to play this in New York this year.

The US Open begins in New York on August 31st and it would be the first Grand Slam event since the Australian Open in January. The French Open Grand Slam event is scheduled to be held in Paris in late September while Wimbledon has been cancelled this year due to the global pandemic.

Andrea Petkovic reached her career high singles ranking of world No. 9 in 2011, the same year she reached the quarterfinals at three of the four Grand Slam events. She has won six WTA titles in her career, including the season-ending WTA Tournament of Champions in 2014. She has a 12-11 record at the US Open, highlighted by a quarter-final appearance at Flushing Meadows in 2011 and a fourth-round finish in 2010. Petkovic has also been working on German television recently.
