'The security will follow us 24 hours without...', says Novak Djokovic's coach
Novak Djokovic is the only one of the Big 3 who flew to the United States to compete in the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and the US Open. All players and their respective teams were asked to follow strict safety rules once they arrived in New York. Goran Ivanisevic, who accompanies the World number 1 on this trip to the United States, has decided to share his feelings inside the bubble. The 2001 Wimbledon champion pointed out how the men in charge of supervising almost every step of all participants. The Serbian phenomenon will be the big favorite for winning the US Open, also due to the absences of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The Swiss has announced that he will miss the rest of the season, while the Spaniard will not defend the title in the Big Apple and will return directly to clay.
Ivanisevic is not a big fan of the strict security measures"Unfortunately, we are in this membrane in this beautiful place and we are avoiding trouble. We have security, 24 hours without which we can't move anywhere. Even in front of the house, the security follows us every day as long as we are here" - Goran Ivanisevic explained. Novak Djokovic, who will also take part in the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati (also in New York), will benefit from a bye in the first round in singles, while in doubles he and his compatriot Filip Krajinovic will have to deal immediately with the Americans Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe. Djokovic has hit out at the media criticism of the event and even said he would repeat it. “I don’t think I’ve done anything bad,” he said. “I do feel sorry for people that were infected. Do I feel guilty for anybody that was infected from that point onward in Serbia, Croatia and region? Of course not. How can you blame one individual for everything? We tried to do something with the right intentions,” he told the New York Times. “Yes, there were some steps that could have been done differently, but am I going to be then forever blamed for doing a mistake? I mean, OK, if this is the way, fine, I’ll accept it, because that’s the only thing I can do. If I had the chance to do the Adria Tour again, I would do it again. It’s like a witch hunt.” Djokovic decided to travel to New York for the US Open because the 17-times grand slam champion did not want to pass up on the opportunity to close in on Roger Federer’s record tally of 20.
