Gael Monfils: Novak Djokovic showed in Rome why he is world No. 1 and GOAT
France's Gael Monfils was impressed with the way world No. 1 Novak Djokovic bounced back from the US Open incident and won the Rome Masters.
Djokovic, who was aiming to win an 18th Grand Slam title, was defaulted from his round-of-16 clash after hitting the lines women with the ball.
Djokovic had a nightmare exit from the US Open but a week later he showed up at the Rome Masters and won a record 36th Masters title.
"Honestly I was surprised mentally, how strong and how quickly he could block everything and that’s why I think, definitely he’s world No. 1 and a GOAT of tennis," Monfils said of Djokovic.
"It was an amazing win for Novak. His victory makes him even more a GOAT (..) big shoutout to Nole again, a big congrats because it was a tough week and well done again buddy, because you show great character.
"A lot of negative stuff and actually, what I love and what I think a lot of people have to learn about that is that a GOAT like Novak can block these things and I’ll tell you guys, it’s not that easy.”

After winning the Rome Masters, Djokovic opened up in his press conference: "Well, look, you know, as I said on the opening press conference here before the tournament started, I did, you know, experience mentally some kind of ups and downs in the first four or five days after that happened. Obviously I was in shock, as many other people.
"But I moved on. Really, I never had an issue in my life to move on from something. Regardless of how difficult it is, you know, I try to, you know, take the next day and hope for the best and move on.
"Obviously having a tournament a week after that happened helped a lot, I think, just because I really wanted to get on the court and just get whatever traces of that, if there is any, out of the way.
"I think I had a really good week. I don't think I played my best tennis, to be honest. I don't want to sound arrogant here. I'm of course very, very satisfied and pleased and happy to win a title. I know that I still have couple of gears, and hopefully I'll be able to raise that level for French, because that's going to be necessary if I want to go deep in the tournament."
