Playing against each other for the third time, world no. 5 and three-time Miami champion Roger Federer defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-2 in swift 61 minutes in 2019 for his 84th Masters 1000 quarter-final! The match was postponed due to rain and played on the next day, with Federer wasting no time on the court against the upcoming youngster, rattling off nine of the final 11 games from 4-3 down in the opener to advance into the last eight. It was Roger's third and best match at Hard Rock Stadium, dropping 11 points in nine service games, fending off three break points in the opening set's tenth game and bringing the remaining service games home with ease to mount the pressure on the young Russian.

Daniil fought well in the first eight games before he suddenly lost the ground, never finding the rhythm again and finishing his journey in the fourth round. Federer fired 22 winners and just eight unforced errors, leaving Medvedev on a 14-15 ratio and dominating in both the shortest and mid-range rallies to forge the victory in just over an hour.

Medvedev reduced the deficit to 2-3 with a service winner in game five before the Swiss brought the next home for a 4-2 advantage. Serving in game seven, Medvedev wasted a 40-15 lead and got broken after a double fault, allowing Federer to bring the victory home a few minutes later and set the quarter-final clash with Kevin Anderson.
