Maria Sakkari aims deep run with Stefanos Tsitsipas in Tokyo mixed doubles event

Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari is looking forward to playing alongisde Stefanos Tsitsipas in the mixed doubles event at the Tokyo Olympics.

Sakkari, ranked at No. 19 in the world, is set to team with world No. 4 Tsitsipas for the second time in her career.

In 2019, Sakkari and Tsitsipas represented Greece at the Hopman Cup and played mixed doubles at the tournament.

“It’s something we both really want, and it’s a dream come true for both of us being here, in singles and in mixed,” said Sakkari, per the ITF website. “We’ve played with each other two and a half years ago and did really well, and now we are both better players. For sure we will try our best to get as far as we can for our country.”

Sakkari hopes for a deep run

Sakkari is hoping that she and Tsitsipas could go all the way in Tokyo.

“It’s not so relaxed, because we both want to win! We have a great chemistry on court, and I think our games also fit well to each other,” Sakkari added. “But the fact that we have a good chemistry on court is the most important thing. We can really do some damage here, so we’re going to try our best.”

On Tuesday, Sakkari exited the women's singles event as she lost to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.

Sakkari won the opening set against Svitolina but then lost the following two sets.

Meanwhile, Tsitsipas handed a straight-set defeat to Frances Tiafoe.

“I’m always trying to find to find solutions, find ways to fix my mistakes and get a better outcome - that was the case today,” said Tsitsipas. “I was able to maintain the high levels of concentration and deliver good tennis in moments where I had to.

“It was a very-well balanced game, mentally.”

It remains to be seen how far can Sakkari and Tsitsipas go in Tokyo.
