Tokyo 2021: web is indignant against Fognini's statement
The race for Italy's tennis medals at the Tokyo Olympics ended. The adventure of the Italia saw the epilogue with the departure of the last two players in the race, namely Camila Giorgi and Fabio Fognini.
The first, however the author of an excellent tournament so far, was eliminated in the quarter-finals by the number 6 of the ranking, the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who won with a double 6-4. The Russian Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, was the executioner in the third round match of the Ligurian, beaten 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in 2 hours and 25 of play.
Fognini, however, attracted furious controversy and not for the performance, as unfortunately often happened to him during his career, but for an unpleasant sentence that he addressed to himself after a ball sent into the net.
"You're a fag, pull over the net": the web is indignant against Fognini"You're a fag, you're a fag," the Italian tennis player yelled at himself in the silence of the empty Tokyo stadium. "Give me this ball" (referring to the ball boy), after which he threw it into Medvedev's court adding: "You are a fag because you have to throw it over the net."
This is the expression that has generated deep indignation especially on the web and among members or sympathizers of the LGBT community. The general indignation, with related offenses of all kinds to his person, could not fail to reach the ear of Fognini himself, who felt obliged to promptly apologize for the words he spoke.
"The heat gives to the head!" Wrote the Italian on Instagram. He added: "In today's match I used a really stupid expression towards myself. Of course, I didn't want to offend anyone's sensibilities. I love the LGBT community and I apologize for the nonsense that came out of me. Now I'm going to bed, because it's night in Tokyo. I embrace you."
In the quarterfinals of the Olympic men's singles tournament, Medvedev will meet Pablo Carreno busta.
