Alexander Zverev: Experts used to say other guys were better but look at me now
German tennis star Alexander Zverev was extremely proud after clinching his maiden gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Zverev, ranked at No. 5 in the world, cruised past Karen Khachanov in the Tokyo Olympics final as he handed the Russian a 6-3 6-1 loss.
At the age of 24, Zverev is already one of the most accomplished players on the Tour.
Zverev now only lacks a Grand Slam title.
At last year's US Open, Zverev was up by two sets against Dominic Thiem before the Austrian stormed back to win in five sets.
"All tennis experts and former players always used to say that other guys were better than me. Now I have 16 trophies -- four Masters, a Nitto ATP Finals title and now Olympic," Zverev said, as quoted on Sport Klub.
Zverev was absolutely thrilled after winning gold medalTsitsipas has now made it all the way at three events this season.
Previously, Tsitsipas won it all in Acapulco and the Madrid Masters.
"This is so much bigger than anything else in sports, especially in tennis - this is an incredible feeling me for me right now," Zverev said, per. "There is nothing better than this. You are not only playing for yourself, you are playing for your country, and the Olympics are the biggest sporting event in the world. The feeling I have now, and will have, nothing will be better."
After the final, Khachanov said Zverev deserved victory.
"He played from the beginning to the end an unbelievable match," Khachanov admitted, per the ITF website. "I also played an outstanding match from my point of view, but he was just better today - all credit to him. For me, the Olympics stands alongside as the Grand Slams, that’s why I trained for this as soon as Wimbledon was over. I was dreaming of gold, but I’ll give it a try at the next Olympics."
