Novak Djokovic: I'm dealing with multiple injuries but US Open is my next big goal
Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic revealed that he is dealing with more than injury following his loss in the bronze medal match.
Djokovic, ranked at No. 1 in the world, failed to win a medal for his country at the Tokyo Olympics as he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta in the bronze medal match.
Former world No. 10 Carreno Busta claimed a 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-3 win over Djokovic to win his maiden Olympic medal.
Djokovic was then scheduled to play in the mixed doubles bronze medal match with Nina Stojanovic but he pulled out due to a shoulder injury.
“I am dealing with injuries. Not one, more than one“, Djokovic told Serbian reporters in Tokyo, as quoted on Tennis Majors, “I hope that it won’t stop me from going to the US Open, which is my next big goal.”
“I do not regret coming or giving my all; how can I have regrets, it is normal when you are at the Olympic Games representing your country. Unfortunately, for the third time at the Olympics, I am losing in the semi-finals. I won the medal only once. I mean, ’only’, a medal is a medal, but for my standards and expectations and wishes, not an ideal outcome“.
Djokovic fell short in his comeback attemptCarreno Busta earned the first break of the match in the fifth game, before serving out for the opener in the 10th game.
As not a single break point was seen in the second set, the set went into a tie-break -- in which Djokovic saved a match point to force a decider.
After losing the second set, Carreno Busta quickly bounced back as he broke Djokovic in the second game and held on to his serve the rest of the way to earn a three-set win.
Djokovic will now take his time to rest and heal from his injuries.
If Djokovic wins the US Open, he will complete a Calendar Grand Slam.
