Steve Darcis to Make Comeback After One Year in Pune

Tennis - 34-year-old Steve Darcis is making a comeback to the tennis circuit after a one-year injury break and will compete in the ATP Tata Open in Pune, Maharashtra this week after an elbow injury. Darcis' last appearance on the circuit came in the 2017 Davis Cup final against France where he played and lost the fifth and final rubber against Lucas Pouille.

Darcis has been preparing in Abu Dhabi for his comeback. He will also play the ATP Challenger in Canberra after the Pune event  and then the Australian Open in Melbourne, with the help of his protected ranking. He is also likely to play the ATP 250 event in Montpellier in February.

Darcis has been ranked as high as No. 38 in 2017 and has won 2 ATP titles and nearly $3 million in career prize money so far. This is not the first major injury-forced lay-off for Darcis, He underwent right shoulder surgery in October 2013 and missed 8 months, then underwent 2 right wrist surgeries following the 2015 season and missed 3 months.

He will play 25 year old Roberto Carballes Baena, the World No. 73, in the first round in Pune. Carballes Baena, from Spain, is the No. 6 seed in the draw. The winner will meet either India's Prajnesh Gunneswaran or American Michael Mmoh in the second round. The tournament's top seeds include South African Kevin Anderson (No. 1), Korea's Hyeoon Chung (No. 2),  France's Gilles Simon (No. 3) and Tunisia's Malek Jaziri (No. 4). He will compete only in the singles draw in Pune.
