Australian Open day 14 recap: Novak Djokovic king of Melbourne
The curtain fell on the Australian Open 2019, the first Grand Slam event of the season. Novak Djokovic is the champion for the seventh time (an all-time record for the Australian Slam). The Serb annihilated Rafael Nadal after three dominated sets.
With three consecutive Slams won, Nole could aim for the second time in his career at the Novak-Slam, should he win Paris. For Nadal, this is the first Slam final lost Slam with the score of 3-0; a negative record that the Spaniard probably did not expect on the eve of the final.
Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert have achieved an important milestone in their careers. Beating John Peers and Henri Kontinen, the French doubles gets the career Grand Slam.
Mats Wilander talked about the conditions of the playing surface in Melbourne, not optimal for Roger Federer: "Roger Federer's defeat against Tsitsipas surprised me a lot. I think he had a good chance to return to winning the trophy, but I think the conditions of the balls and the surface were not ideal for him. Roger is 37 and he needs perfect conditions to fight for a Slam title. We'll see at Wimbledon and the US Open".
Toni Nadal disappointed by Grigor Dimitrov?: "I remember when he played against Rafa for the first time. I thought he would be number one of the world. He must be much stronger mentally, especially at key moments. The mental side is the most important thing".
