Dominic Thiem to skip Davis Cup and Cordoba Open

Dominic Thiem has withdrawn from the Davis Cup tie between Austria and Chile that will take place on Friday, February 1 and Saturday 2. The world No. 8 has been dealing with some health issues that had not allowed him to continue his second round match against Alexei Popyrin in the Australian Open second round last week. Further tests will be made to understand the issues in detail and take the proper methods. 'Dominic first needs to take a rest and so avoid the competitions', said his coach Gunter Bresnik through a statement. 'Next week he will re-start again training lightly and at the moment he plans to come back on tour in Buenos Aires. Dominic will keep fingers crossed for the Austrian team and possibly in Salisbourg or at least in front or the TV.'

Thiem is set to skip the Cordoba Open that starts on Monday February 4. If everything goes well, he will play in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro on clay.

After the win over Thiem, on his own mobility improvements Popyrin had said: 'I would say that's something I've had for a long time. It was more improving the serve, the percentage of first serve in, so the consistency. I think I was doing that really well in the first and second round and today. Yeah, basically when my coach came in, six months ago he said, You got to work on your backhand. For the longest time, we've been working on my backhand. We're still working on my backhand. I think it's improved a lot.'
