Mats Wilander: Rafael Nadal and Petra Kvitova have similar attitudes
Mats Wilander believes that there are some similarities between Rafael Nadal and Petra Kvitova's mindsets. Both of them have played great matches in their way to the Australian Open final. On Kvitova's win over Danielle Collins in the semi-finals, Wilander said: "She was just a much better player than Collins, she played well since the beginning without knowing if she was gonna play better the whole match outdoor or if they would close the roof. She hasn't been as fit as she is now, she is able to defend and it's similar what happened to Rafa Nadal. She is so far ahead, she is so relaxed, and she plays such a good tennis when she is confident. She is more secure in the way she plays tennis. She has a B plan, she hasn't a C plan but she is more relaxed about the plan A which is dictating the rallies."
Both Nadal and Kvitova, however, lost their respective finals. On Saturday, in the women's singles final, Kvitova lost to Naomi Osaka 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 after having saved three match points in the second set. In the men's singles final on Sunday, Novak Djokovic beat Nadal in a one-sided match 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to win his 15th Grand Slam. Djokovic is now third in the list of players with the most number of Grand Slam titles, after Roger Federer (20) and Nadal (17). Djokovic surpassed Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slams, with which he had been tied after his US Open win in 2018.
