ITF sold its soul by changing Davis Cup format, says Caujolle

In an interview to La Marseillaise the Marseille Open 13 Tournament Director Jean-François Caujolle commented on the new Davis Cup format. "Davis Cup should have started its transformation 15 years ago. All of a sudden, another format came up, which was totally the opposite than the previous one and it almost becomes an affair. We will mostly play for the flag, but also for ourselves and for a cheque. I feel ITF sold its soul", said Caujolle.

The France's Davis Cup team captain Sebastian Grosjean expects a full commitment from the players: "Team France is above all. Playing for France and representing it is a honor. Every player will be there if he is picked."

Grosjean would not be surprised to see Lucas Pouille playing. The 26-year-old said multiple times that he is against the new format, but he may play just to send a disrespectful message to the country. "If I call him, he will answer straight forward. We know that Lucas's love for the jersey has been there since an early age. All the French players want to play the Davis Cup, even the youngest ones."

Grosjean expects difficult ties against Serbia, led by Novak Djokovic, and Argentina of Juan Martin del Potro although they are unlikely to play. "Since the two best ranked players will compete, we know that every match, every set and also every game count. We will have to play hard and have the ambition to go as far as possible."
