Roger Federer has very good coaches, he doesn't need me - Toni Nadal
In an interview with Tages Anzeiger, Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni was asked about what his reaction would be if Roger Federer asked him to be his coach. "Who knows. He has very good coaches, he does not need me. I would have coached him in a different way than I did with Rafael. As a coach, you have to give the player what he needs. That's different for Rafael and Federer," said Toni.
Is Rafael's biggest challenge not to get frustrated when he is injured? "That's nothing new for him. Rafael learned to deal with it. He does not think about it too much. He always does his best in those circumstances. Of course, he had many injuries. But he is the only one who has never left the top ten over the last 14 years. Never! He was written off so many times, but he is still there."
On how he coached Rafael, Toni added: "We worked a lot on his technique. But when Rafael was very young, I knew he would have been a very good player. And I wanted to prepare him for the future, for the biggest challenges at the top of the sport. In order to cope with them, you need a strong character. But Rafael made it easier too. He always listened, he was always ready to work on himself. You can tell many things, but if the player does not listen, you cannot get anything. Rafael was the perfect student. He has always done everything. He never thought about being of the best. He knew he was a human like all the people who sometimes feel well and sometimes not so well."
