ATP Bastad: Ymer bagels Davidovich Fokina. Carballes Baena ousts Munar
The ATP 250 event in Bastad has kicked off with two main draw matches and the final qualifying round encounters. After losing in the final qualifying round at Wimbledon, Mikael Ymer scored the first victory on the ATP level after Roland Garros, beating the fellow youngster with a wild card Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 in two hours and eight minutes. The Spaniard had led 6-4, 4-2 before Mikael started to climb back, rattling off 11 of the last 12 games to race over the finish line and move into the second round. The Swede saved five out of nine break points and settled into a fine rhythm from the middle of the second set, stealing more than a half return points and delivering seven breaks (six in a row) for the 12th ATP victory. Davidovich Fokina grabbed the opening set with a break in game five, stealing the rival's serve twice at the beginning of the second set to forge the advantage and move closer to the finish line. Ymer broke back in game eight before another loose service game that pushed him 5-4 down, allowing Alejandro to serve for the win.
It wasn't to be for the Spaniard, though, squandering the last three games of the second set and fading from the court in the decider, allowing Mikael to serve a bagel and book the spot in the second round. After a promising start of 2019, Jaume Munar has been on a downfall ever since Barcelona, losing the last eight matches on the Tour following another setback in Bastad where Roberto Carballes Baena ousted him 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The more experienced Spaniard lost serve four times and did enough to overcome that deficit on the return, earning five breaks from ten opportunities to cross the finish line first for the 12th ATP win of the season. Trailing 3-1 in the first set, Carballes Baena took five of the next six games for a 6-4 before Munar raised his level in set number two, serving well and securing a break in game two for a 6-3 and the momentum ahead of the decider.
Jaume was on a strong course, jumping into a 3-1 advantage in the third set before Roberto bounced back to take the next five games and celebrate the triumph. World no. 53 Pablo Carreno Busta didn't sign in time and was forced to play in the qualifying draw, struggling in two matches but reaching the main draw after a tight 7-6, 7-6 victory over Roberto Quiroz in an hour and 46 minutes. Both players saved four out of five break points and the Spaniard played better in the decisive moments to move over the top, facing Jeremy Chardy in the first round. Another Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles toppled Alexey Vatutin 6-2, 6-1 in swift 45 minutes, booking spot in the second ATP tournament of the year after Geneva. Bernabe lost 14 points on serve, giving serve away once and producing five breaks after a rock-solid performance on the return, earning the opportunity to play the fourth match on the ATP level.
