ATP Winston-Salem: Andy Murray loses again. Duck Hee Lee writes history
A qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo had an easy day at the office in the first round of Winston-Salem, toppling Amir Weintraub 6-0, 6-0 in 40 minutes for the third ATP win of the season. Using the protected ranking to enter the main draw, the Israeli couldn't do much on the court, winning five points on the return and dropping staggering 75% of the points in his games to suffer six breaks from 11 opportunities offered to Bjorn. After ten straight losses, Marco Cecchinato grabbed the first ATP victory since Rome when Alexander Bublik retired while trailing -6, 1-0 after swift 52 minutes. The Italian saved two break points at 3-3 in the opener, taking the tie break 7-3 and moving through following an early break in the second set. Jeremy Chardy defeated a qualifier Raymond Sarmiento 6-1, 7-6 in an hour and 25 minutes, losing serve twice and delivering five breaks for the 21st victory of the season.
The Frenchman was the only player on the court in the opener, storming over his opponent in 25 minutes before more challenging set number two where Sarmiento served for the set at 5-4. Jeremy broke back in the very last moment, sending the set into a tie break and clinching it 7-5 to book the place in the second round. Pablo Andujar was too strong for Nicolas Jarry, delivering a 6-4, 6-2 triumph in an hour and 15 minutes after stealing the rival's serve five times from 12 opportunities. Jarry served under 50% and never found his rhythm despite a couple of breaks he grabbed, staying in touch until 4-4 in the opener and losing eight of the next ten games to propel the Spaniard through. Duck Hee Lee became the first deaf player with an ATP victory, beating Henri Laaksonen 7-6, 6-1 in an hour and 45 minutes!
The young Korean saved two out of three break chances, overcoming a 4-1 deficit in the opening set to steal it in the tie break and dominating in set number two with a couple of breaks to reach the second round. In the match with only two breaks of serve, Alexei Popyrin defeated Thiago Monteiro 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in two hours and 15 minutes, winning two points less than the Brazilian but prevailing in the deciding tie break 9-7 for the ninth triumph of the season. Andy Murray still stands on one victory in 2019 after a tight 7-6, 7-5 loss to Tennys Sandgren in two hours and nine minutes. It was a solid display from a former world no. 1 who scored two breaks and suffered three in his games to send Tennys into the next round.
The opening game saw some nine deuces and one break chances for the Briton before Sandgren brought it home to avoid an early setback, with rock-solid serving from both to set up a tie break where Andy saved three set points before creating the one of his own at 8-7. Sandgren saved it after a well-constructed attack, taking the breaker 10-8 for a 7-6 after an hour and 15 minutes. Murray lost serve twice at the beginning of the second set, pulling one back in game four and another one when Sandgren served for the match at 5-4, leveling the score at 5-5 before getting broken at 15 to fall behind again, allowing Tennys to seal the deal with a forehand drive-volley in game 12.
