Sam Groth: Thanasi Kokkinakis deserves US Open wildcard
Former Australian tennis player Sam Groth believes that fellow compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis has deserved to receive an US Open wildcard as he has proved capable of competing against and beating the top guys.
On Wednesday, Tennis Australia handed an US Open wildcard to former world No. 69 Kokkinakis -- who has plummeted to No. 212 in the world following yet another season marked with health issues.
Kokkinakis' career-best win came at the Miami Masters last year, when he famously came from a set down to stun record 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in their second round clash.
While explaining why giving Kokkinakis a wildcard was a good decision, former world No. 53 Groth took a shot at 134th-ranked Alex Bolt.
"He (Kokkinakis) is the only guy in that group who's a genuine chance of taking out a top talent. You don't reward mediocrity, a guy like Bolt, he's been sitting at that ranking forever, so how long do you keep saying we'll reward someone at 130 in the world," Groth told The First Serve.
