Bianca Andreescu earns two honors at Canadian Sport Awards
Teenage sensation Bianca Andreescu has been one of the players on the WTA Tour so far in 2019 despite a reduced schedule, claiming three big titles to crack the top-5. Kicking off the season from outside the top-150, the Mississauga native reached the final in Auckland as a qualifier, advancing into the main draw at the Australian Open as well and gathering experience for what would come in the following months. At Indian Wells, Andreescu toppled six rivals to win the title, becoming the youngest champion in the desert since Serena Williams and earning enough points to find herself in the top-25.
The pace in the opening three months proved to be too tough for Bianca to handle, though, suffering a shoulder injury in Miami and playing only one tournament before Toronto, getting back at her best and shining in front of the home fans to grab another big title. Playing with no fear and determined to show her quality, Bianca notched three top-10 wins to lift the second big title of the season, heading to the US Open as one of the title favorites. Despite her age and the fact she never competed in the main draw in New York before, Andreescu lost only two sets in seven encounters, delivering her best tennis when it mattered the most to embrace Major glory after a 6-3, 7-5 win over Serena Williams in the title match.
Thus, Bianca became the first US Open champion who lifted the crown on debut, standing as the first teenager with the title at this level since Maria Sharapova in 2006 and the first since Monica Seles who claimed Major tournament on the fourth attempt. After New York, Bianca has become the Canadian to talk about in the past weeks, earning many awards and honors and receiving a key to the city by Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie, also unveiling a street sign named "Andreescu Way." The latest awards came at the 42nd Canadian Sport Awards on Saturday when Bianca was named the female summer athlete of the year, also capturing the people's choice award for the performance of the year. Andreescu will play only a couple of tournaments by the end of 2019, thrilled with the progress she made this season and motivated to chase even higher goals next year.
