Britain's Heather Watson on getting back to tennis after the lockdownWatson, who usually trains at the IMG Academy in Florida founded by Nick Bollettieri, returned home to Guernsey when the tennis tour was shutdown and then stayed in London due to the uncertainty about the coronavirus situation.
According to the Tennishead website, Watson says, “It was really nice to spend some time there (at Guernsey) . But when lockdown actually happened I came back to London because I had more chance of being able to train there, though to be honest I was very bored. Without tennis I was really struggling. I was just at home trying to do the best I could with what I had. From the first day when we were allowed to play tennis again I played every day for two weeks without a day off. I’ve just been so happy to be back.”
The Brit says she cannot wait to start competing once again on the tour. “When we stopped because of the coronavirus I was absolutely loving tennis. Now I want to play as many weeks as I can.”
The 28 year old Watson is currently ranked No. 51 in the world, which is just 13 spots below her career-best ranking of No. 38 in the world. She has won 4 career singles titles so far. She also won the mixed doubles title at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships with Henri Kontinen.
Heather Watson has been in good form in 2020 - she reached the semi-finals in Hobart as a qualifier. In February, she won the Mexican Open in Acapulco, beating Coco Vandeweghe, Kateryna Bondarenko, Christina Mchale, Wang Xiyu and Leylah Annie Fernandez to win the title. Her best performance at the majors was reaching the third round of the Australian Open in 2013 and the third round at Wimbledon on three occasions - in 2012, 2015, and 2017. She played the WTA event in Lexington last week and was beaten in the first round by American Jennifer Brady. She is scheduled to play in the upcoming US Open in New York.
