Mouratoglou urges WTA to change rules in order to favour Cori Gauff

Speaking to Daily Mail the tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou commented on the WTA Rule not permitting the U-16s players to play more than 10 tournaments in a season. Cori Gauff had a light tournament schedule this year and she trained at the Mouratoglou Academy near Nice, France. The Frenchman said: "This rule is completely not adapted. You can’t have a rule that applies to everyone, because we’re talking about the development of people and everyone is different. You are basically preventing young players from doing their job. You have to also consider that when it’s the right momentum, it’s the right momentum. This is going to slow her down for sure."

On tennis rules, Mouratoglou added: "I don't understand why we do complicated things before simple things. You won’t put the roof on the house before putting the foundations. The main problem is that we don’t have enough passion for our sport. We have guys with great personalities, strong personalities. We don’t have to change everything about tennis – just let them be themselves on the court. Give the chance to our sport before trying to change it."

The US Open went against the existing WTA rule and gave Gauff a main draw wild card into the tournament. Gauff reached the third round in New York before losing to the 2018 champion Naomi Osaka. Wimbledon had given the teenager a wild card for the qualifiers. She made it to the second week of a Slam for the first time as she reached the Championships' fourth-round, losing to eventual champion, Simona Halep.
