Matteo Berrettini: 'It's not easy to stay away from Alja Tomljanovic'

In an interview to Gazzetta the US Open semifinalist Matteo Berrettini spoke about his relationship with his Australian girlfriend Alja Tomljanovic who is training ahead of the Fed Cup final. Berrettini said: "We are two calm people, we share the passion for dogs and movies. But we often have to be away from each other and it's not easy to understand each other being from another side of the world. But how could you handle it when there were no video calls?"

On people saying he is a good person, Berrettini added: "That's given by the values my family gave me. And then my coach Vincenzo Santopadre. Over the last ten years I spent more time with him than I did with my relatives. I feel people's support, I know that some children started following tennis after my results, which gives me a big joy."

On Sinner, Berrettini added: "Jannik is a smart, clever guy. He doesn't need my advices. We trained together sometimes in Monte Carlo, I saw him in Vienna, he surprised me. From my experience I can tell him he just needs to enjoy himself and learn from his experiences. In every training session and match he makes a step forward. The desire to invest on himself and improve consistently was the key for all the greats."
